Located in the Jagtial district of Telangana, Dharmapuri is known as the "Dakshina Kashi" (Varanasi of the South). It is a deeply spiritual town centered around the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, offering a quieter and more contemplative Pushkaralu experience.
If you want to avoid the massive crowds of Rajahmundry and Bhadrachalam, but still want a deeply spiritual experience, Dharmapuri is your destination. The Godavari flows past this ancient town, and taking a dip here during Pushkaralu is considered highly meritorious.
The town is famous for its connection to Lord Narasimha (an avatar of Vishnu) and Lord Shiva. The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is the main draw, famous for its beautiful architecture and the unique festivals held here throughout the year.
Why choose Dharmapuri? The Telangana government has allocated significant funds to upgrade the infrastructure here for 2027. It is an ideal location for families and elderly pilgrims who want to combine their holy dip with temple darshan without being crushed by crowds. The atmosphere is peaceful, allowing you to perform your rituals with focus.
Visiting the ghat without visiting the temple is incomplete. The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Dharmapuri is one of the most revered in Telangana. It is believed that Lord Narasimha appeared here to protect his devotee, Prahlada.
The temple is unique because it houses both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The architecture features intricate carvings, and the temple tank (Pushkarini) is right next to the river ghats.
During the Pushkaralu, the temple administration will be conducting special poojas and abhishekams. Expect tight security, so it is best to leave your phones and bags at your hotel or in the designated lockers.
The ghats open early. Because the crowds here are smaller, you have more flexibility. However, the best time is still between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM. The water is calm, and the morning light on the temple gopurams is beautiful.
As part of the ₹1,000 crore Telangana allocation, Dharmapuri is getting new changing rooms, clean toilets, and medical camps. Because it is a smaller town, the infrastructure is more manageable than at Bhadrachalam, but do not expect the massive tent cities you will find in Andhra Pradesh.
Dharmapuri has limited private hotels. The temple choultries are the most convenient option, but they must be booked well in advance. Alternatively, you can stay in Jagtial (20 km away) or Karimnagar (50 km away) and drive down early in the morning.
